Two memorable images from Planet of the Daleks

Near the beginning of Season 5, Episode 7, Simon mentions two memorable images from Planet of the Daleks — images which led us to expect the production to be be more visually spectactular than it actually turned out to be.

The first image is Chris Achilleos’s artwork from the cover of the novelisation of Planet of the Daleks (1976).

The cover of the novelisation Doctor Who and the Planet of the Daleks by Terrance Dicks. Against the background of a massive planet and comets in the sky, the Doctor and Taron stand on either side of a Dalek, the Doctor holding its sink plunger and Taron holding the gun, from which a death ray is emitted.

The second image is a publicity shot of Jon and Katy, along with guest stars Tim Preece and Jane How, in the Dalek army’s cavern set from Part 6 of the story.

The Doctor, Jo, Codal and Rebec are standing on the walkway looking down at an army of three Daleks on the floor below.
